Kite surfing: Golf Course Car Park, Borth Wind Direction: W Wind Stength: 14-18 knots Surf / Sea State: 1 foot messy surf Air Temperature: 17ºC Sea Temperature: 17ºC Weather: Sunny spells Max Speed: Distance Covered:
I got home from work at about 4pm, but there wasn't quite enough wind, so I
went for a walk on the beach, had a quick fly with someones 4.0m Blade II
and had a little chat before heading back home where I met Darren.
It looked as though the wind would pick up later so we had a cup of tea and
then haeded back to the beach. It was now blowing at aroun 14 knots so we
rigged out kites and got out there.
Things were a little more difficlt than my last few kite-surfing sessions
as the onshore winds and waves made it difficult to get away from the
beach. I almost got dragged across the sand at one point and Darren
definitely did as I saw him travelling face first across the beach!! Darren
was getting on better than me most of the time though. In the end I decided
that I was too overpowered, and couldn't get upwind as I couldn't fly the
kite low enough in the window without getting dragged off downwind out of
control. So, I came in and tied a knot in my depower system as the cleat
doesn't hold.
I then went back out and got on much better. On my first run I gained loads
of ground upwind, got out through the whitewater and headed off towards the
bar nicely in control and heading nicely upwind. I then turned around and
continued gaining ground upwind, until I was back in line with the groynes
where I started from, but still out beyound the whitewater. I had a couple
more runs like that, but the wind was still increasing and I soon become
overpowered again. This time it led to a few unintentional flights with my
board behind me, a couple of smacks from the board, a little tangle with my
boards leash, and before I knoew it I was back downwind, a litle more
battered than before, and back on the beach!!!
I decided that was enough and packed up. Chirs was just launching, Darren
was changing down to a smaller kite, Colin was still ripping it up with his
15m kite and Miguel had finally got himself sorted after losing a fin from
his board and then finding it again a little later.
I checkd the wind as I left the beach and it was now 18 knots and still
picking up... I was tempted to go windsurfing, but didn't really have the
time.
I was quite pleased with my few runs where I got upwind, but the rest of
the session was really all about learning to cope with too much wind.
